Adoption of Poverty Reduction Strategies: A Study of the Archdiocese of Nairobi

Abstract:

The main purpose of the study was to examine strategies used by the Archdiocese of Nairobi in poverty reduction. The study sought to examine the coordination of church supported projects, the challenges facing the Archdiocese in improving peoples’ quality life and suggestions to improve church supported projects. The sample consisted of one hundred and sixty (N=160) project managers. The study used purposive and systematic random sampling methods to sample the project managers. Data collection instrument included questionnaire. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) was used to aid the process of data analysis. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages were used to present the data. From the analysis, the study found the following: The Archdiocese of Nairobi had contributed to reduce poverty in the parish by making contributions like initiation of self-help projects, empowering Christians and provision and improvement of health facilities to residents in the diocese. The church had also assisted in promoting self-help groups by financing the groups and training of the members and project managers. The major challenges facing the church in improving people’s quality life were lack of funds, illiteracy level and high level of poverty. The ongoing formation and training of leaders, holding education seminars and encouraging professionalism in work could be solutions that can go a long way in improving of leadership in the parishes while improvement on the flow of communication, consultative on decision making process and improvement of feedback processes could be the possible solutions to improve on how the church projects are run. The study recommended that the project managers, local community, financial institutions and the government to work together towards reinforcing the strategies that are aimed at poverty reduction in the Diocese.
