Abstract

The study intended to find out the effects of HIV/AIDS among the people working and living in Magadi Township. The study was guided by the following research questions: What contributes to the prevalence of HIV/Aids in Magadi Township? What are the effects of HIV/Aids on Social and economic life of people in Magadi Township? What can be done to mitigate the effects of HIV/Aids among the people in Magadi Township

The study employed survey research design to generate the primary data with the help of questionnaires. The sample consisted 71 respondents sampled from employees of Magadi Soda Company and social clubs around the around Magadi Township. Both random and purposive sampling techniques were used.

The data collected was coded using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science). The outcome of the quantitative data from closed-ended questions was analyzed using quantitative method and presented in frequencies and percentages.

The study found out that: the major factors contributing to the prevalence of HIV/AIDs in Magadi Township were outdated cultural practices; unfaithfulness among married couples; poverty leading to prostitution and inadequate sex education among the youth and adults. The effects of the epidemic included increased morbidity and mortality among workers; low performance; absenteeism at the place of work and low drive.

The study recommended that government, Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), churches and communities to take a leading role in combating the menace through sound policy formulation, conducting educative programs and offering both moral and health support to the infected and affected.
